Ards 1sts had a convincing win over Omagh 2nds last Saturday and progressed to the next round of the Town’s Cup. Receiving the kick off and playing towards Scrabo with the wind on their back Ards immediately got into their stride and after 5 minutes no8 Graeme Taylor crashed over following a catch & drive from a lineout, outhalf Paul Cox converted. Ards 7 v Omagh 0
This was the perfect start for Ards and they continued in the same vain, setting early dominance in the scrum and lineout. In the 20th minute following good pressure Ards were awarded a penalty after Omagh were caught offside, Cox converted. Ards 10 v Omagh 0
In the 25th minute Ards’ dominance was clearly evident when Ards took a scrum against the head and drove Omagh over their own line with no8 Taylor touching down again, Cox added the conversion. Ards 17 v Omagh 0
Ards continued to have the upper hand for the remainder of the half with second rows Ross Torney and Gareth McBurney impressive with strong carries; to Omagh’s credit they defended well and repelled any would be Ards attacks.

Playing into the wind Ards tightened up their game but didn’t drop the tempo. In the 46th minute an Ards attack saw scrum half Stewart Paul and Cox link well but the final pass to Ards winger Adam Coulter was knocked on; the resulting Omagh scrum was turned over by the Ards pack and flanker Onisi Burekama picked up and powered over, the conversion was missed. Ards 22 v Omagh 0
Ards continued to dominate most aspects of play, the front row of captain Andrew Foster, hooker Tom Arthur Donnan and prop Matt Kane were relishing each scrum; fellow forwards Danny Patton, John Dowey and Josh McFarland were strong in contact and effective in the lineout.
In the 69th minute Ards scored the try of the match; winger Coulter fielded an Omagh kick deep in his own half and counter attacked linking with scrum half Paul and fellow winger Adam Faloon; Faloon made good ground and into the Omagh half drawing the Omagh defence before he fed the supporting Cox who ran in from the Omagh 10mtr line; Cox converted his own try. Ards 29 v Omagh 0
Ards now had their tails up and all players were looking to get their hands on the ball, however the Omagh defence continued to press and in the 75th minute Ards were punished for their over exuberance when an Omagh back intercepted an Ards pass and ran in to score a converted try. Ards 29 v Omagh 7
Ards replied with gusto and in the last play of the game Ards centre Trevor Devlin finished off after good work by the Ards pack at the breakdown allowing Cox to release Devlin to go in for the score, the conversion was missed. Ards 34 v Omagh 7
All in all a convincing win for Ards who continue their recent run of good form; it is evident for all those at Hamilton Park that the work of the coaches and players is now paying dividends. This Saturday Ards look forward to hosting Limavady in a return league match which saw Ards snatch a victory in the last play of the match.
