Ards finish year with a bonus point win!
Ards make hard work of students
A sizeable crowd gathered at Hamilton Park last Saturday when Ards welcomed bottom placed UUC for the last rugby action of 2018.
The match ball was presented the previous day by Dougie Harley from the Friends of Ards Rugby Lunch Society aka The FARLS to joint head coach John West.
Buoyed by recent results and performances Ards went into the match hoping to finish the year on a high. However it was a first half that Ards would prefer to forget about with UUC playing territorial rugby, kicking deep into the Ards half and adopting a fast up defence thereby not allowing Ards to build up any phases of play or continuity.
UUC’s kicker was in fine form and his boot gave UUC a 0 - 12 lead after 30mins.
Ards finally got some continuity going and it was flanker Onisi Burekama who crashed over for an unconverted try after 33mins.
Half - time: Ards 5 v UUC 12
A stern team talk at half time saw the appropriate response from the Ards players, however UUC’s defence was resolute.
Ards substitute Michael Lawton narrowed the lead with a well struck penalty after 60mins. Ards 8 v UUC 12
In the 68th minute Ards then took the lead when Burekama scored his second try of the match which Lawton converted. Ards 15 v UUC 12
With the bit between their teeth and confidence restored Ards dominated the rest of the match scoring a two unconverted tries through second row Gareth McBurney and winger Trevor Devlin.
Final score: Ards 25 v UUC 12
All in all an indifferent performance by the Ards squad, perhaps the lack of league match was to blame for the ring rustiness or was it too much Xmas turkey!
This Saturday Ards travel to Randalstown in the opening round of the Millar McCall & Wylie Town’s Cup.
