Ards 2nds come up short against a strong Ballynahinch 5th xv.
Poor decision making costs Ards
Following their heavy defeat away to Enniskillen last week, Ards 2nds made a valiant effort against a strong Ballynahinch side on Saturday at Hamilton Park. It was good to welcome back Jonny Miller and Andy Rigby to the playing fold.
With a team that bore little resemblance to last week's and the wind at their backs, Ards started strongly, taking play quickly into the oppositions half. From the start the dominant scrum produced good ball, which allowed centre Onisi Burekama to break through the defence on a number of occasions. The high point of the half was a flowing move which took the ball from inside the Ards half, deep into opposition territory and was finished by an excellent unconverted try in the corner by centre Matt Warnock.
Ards controlled the tempo of the game for most of the first half. But ill-discipline cost them dear when they conceded a number of penalties in quick succession, allowing The 'Hinch' to cross the line on the blow of the whistle for half time.
The second half started as the first finished, with the opposition taking more control of the game and allowing them another unconverted try and a penalty before Ards responded.
The home side had the best of the exchanges in the last quarter of the match, as time and again they broke through the opponents defence, full back Michael Taylor was causing all sorts of mayhem. But again indiscipline and poor decision making cost them dear.
This was a game which the home side could have won and lessons will be learnt for the next league encounter away the Larne 2nds next Saturday
