By STEPHEN NUTT
Ards 2nds Forster Cup run ends with an indifferent performance at Roughfort.
Ards 2nds travelled to Roughfort on Saturday to take on Academy 2nds in the Forster Cup quarter final.
A disappointing and disjointed first half was exasperated on 30mins when Ards lost scrum half Mark McLean with a nasty gash to the head and at the same time centre Oren Kisby was yellow carded for a dangerous tackle.
Despite this, it was just before half time before Academy managed to cross the Ards line for an unconverted try. Half time: Academy 5 v Ards 2nds 0
The second half was much the same as the first for Ards with too many needless penalties being conceded. Academy extended their lead by converting two of these. Academy 11 v Ards 2nds 0.
Ards responded with a try by vice-captain David Chivers who forced his way over the Academy line, the conversion was missed. Academy 11 v Ards 5
Ards suffered more mishap when outhalf and game maker Andy Savage left the field after injuring his shoulder making a try saving tackle. Ards now had to re-arrange their backline with captain Adam Faloon going to scrum half and centre Kisby at outhalf. The Ards forwards Ards were up for the task ably led by Chivers fellow forwards Lewis English, Paul Hamilton, Jonny McCartney, Adam McKee and debutant prop David Michael all relished the physicality of the match with strong carries.
With the match entering the final ten minutes Ards had prop Michael yellow carded and finished the match with fourteen players. Academy extended their lead with another unconverted try. Academy 16 v Ards 2nds 5
A well placed restart saw Chivers gather the ball and go on a charge deep into the Academy half; Ards kept up the momentum and from a lineout Hamilton drove over, the conversion was missed.
Final score: Academy 16 v Ards 2nds 10.
