Match report: Ards 3rds v Ballymena 4ths - McCambley Cup
Early scores cost Ards
Ards 3rds welcomed Ballymena 4ths Hamilton Park last Saturday a McCambley Cup 1st round match.
Ards conceded a number of soft scores early but got themselves back into the game by the hour mark to trail 22-29.
Ballymena were clearly tiring and looking concerned, unfortunately Ards conceded the all important next score.
Two final tries in the last few minutes very much flattered Ballymena with a final score of 48-22 and was no way a reflection of the game.
Despite the Ballymena side being very dangerous in the backs in particular their 10 was running the game with ball in hand and boot, the Ards men stood up to the huge experienced Ballymena pack and never took a step backwards all day.
The lineouts and scrums set the platform for all of Ards’ four tries and the determination shown was a credit to all 18 on the field. Ards just never recovered from the early tries conceded and chasing the game was an impossible task given the threat Ballymena had behind the scrum.
Moment of the day was a team break out from our own 22 in the first half, that was akin to a Barbarians team of the 80s, almost every player got on the ball and should have ended with a score only for Captain and otherwise superb Davy Thompson to have the ball knocked from his grasp on the two metre line when a score was imminent. Had this score been converted the game may have turned at this point given the extra confidence Ards would have gathered.
The disappointment of the squad at the end of the game was clear for all to see, we now await the Plate draw for the 16th December.
