Ards U16s take part in 3 team blitz at Larne
By STEPHEN NUTT
With no League match schedules Ards U16s accepted an invite from Larne rugby to take part in a blitz with Randalstown.
With no league matches for a few weeks the UPS sponsored Ards U16s travelled to Larne last Saturday to take part in a friendly blitz alongside the hosts and Randalstown. Illness and unavailability prevented Ards taking their full squad but those did travel gave their all.
The first game was against the hosts and was a fairly nervous affair before Ards took hold of the game. Two quick tries in succession left Larne struggling to come back and with games only lasting fifteen minutes Ards finished winners 10 - 0.
Next up was Randalstown who started very aggressively and put Ards on the back foot for the first 10 minutes, scoring 2 tries down the blindside. After a reshuffle in the Ards set up, they were soon on the attack and scored a converted try, but time ran out and the match finished in a 10 - 7 defeat.
In the second round of matches Ards played Larne and just like the first match the game started tentatively before Ards took control through the hard work of the forwards, the game ended with a 12 - 0 win for Ards.
The last game was against Randalstown which began slowly but became more aggressive around the breakdown. At first this aggressiveness put Ards off their game plan but they held out and it wasn’t long before Ards were over for the only score of the match with a converted try. The match was stopped early due to injury concerns for both teams.
This was an improved U16s performance than recent weeks and hopefully the form continues with a friendly against Ballynahinch at Ards this Saturday.
