UPS sponsored Ards U16s lose to Donaghadee in friendly match
Ards U16s 24 v Donaghadee 38
With league campaigns over for this season and both teams waiting to see their play-off draw, the opportunity to play a friendly match was well received by both teams. School half term holidays, injuries and illness limited the UPS sponsored Ards U16 squad to only fifteen players, whilst Donaghadee managed sixteen. Debuts were given to a couple new U16 recruits and injured Ards 1st XV player David Armstrong refereed the match.
The game did not disappoint with both sides evenly matched, every ball was hard fought, every tackle was strong and every inch of the field was covered by both sets of players.
It was Ards who led most of the game but in the second half, Ards scrum half Ryan Harris had to come off with an injury, Donaghadee did not match the Ards numbers and Ards then played a man down for the remaining 25 minutes.
Ards defended with all they had, but Donaghadee made full use of their extra man, spreading the play and eventually wearing down the Ards defence to come back to level the scores.
Donaghadee now had the momentum and in the last 5 minutes went over for the winning scores. The game ended 38-24 to Donaghadee but this was not a reflection on how close the game was and like the last encounter, showed the talent of both squads.
