Ards Rugby reflect on a season of progress

On Saturday the senior players, coaches & management gathered in the Hamilton Park clubhouse for their end of season awards. The awards presentations were preceded by the Champions Cup final and BBQ.

Chairman of Playing & Selection Paul Thompson presided over proceedings and outlined what a great season it was for adult rugby.

The 1sts finishing 3rd in their league and reaching a final at the Kingspan Stadium; the 2nds had a great start to the season, then lost some form mid season but came back strong in the latter part of the season, finishing mid table in their league; the 3rds went unbeaten all season and yet again won their league.

The club had two Ulster Junior representatives in Robbie Johnston & Angus Christie who both made significant contributions to Ulster retaining the Interprovincial Championship.

Club Player of the Year went to Matthew Walker despite rehabbing after knee surgery, rarely missed helping out at a training session or on match day, helped coach with the Youth section, volunteered to serve at pre-match lunches and managed the club social bookings and then made is his playing comeback late in the season and forced his way into a starting place at the Kingspan final. Well done Matthew, a great role model or all our players!!

Young Player of the Year went to Ethan Bell, this season the Kircubbin man focussed on his rugby and his class showed through.

U20 Player of the Year went to Shay Duckett, who in his first season of senior rugby after leaving school played in 24 out the 25 matches that the 1sts had this season.

Club Top Try Scorer went jointly to Ethan Bell and Adam Barnes, Adam is relatively new to rugby having swam internationally whilst at school and only took up rugby seriously upon leaving school two years ago, there’s alot more to come from Adam.

1st XV Players Player of Year - Robbie Johnston
1st XV Coaches Player of Year - Robbie Grant

2nd XV Players Player of Year - Aaron Bittles
2nd XV Coaches Player of Year - Andrew Foster
