It is with deep sorrow that Ards Rugby Football Club announces the passing of their esteemed member and former Club President, Robin Cole, after a long illness.

Robin gave many years of service to rugby, not just to the Ards club but to Ulster rugby in general. He will be sorely missed by all.

After serving his time as a player and member of the Ards Executive Committee, during which time he held the position of Honorary Secretary, Robin was elected President of the club in 1986/87, the year that the 1st XV won the Senior Cup for the 2nd time. At the same time he was Ards' representative on the IRFU Ulster Branch Committee during which time his legal background and training was put to good use in his monitoring and updating of the playing regulations for club competitions. Indeed, his wise counsel was often sought on these matters by the rugby hierarchy in Dublin.

As a result of this long period of voluntary service to the Branch, Robin was elected President of the IRFU Ulster Branch in season 2012/13, following on from his maternal grandfather, H E Emerson, who was President of the Irish Rugby Football Union in 1937/38.

As the club's first and, thus far, only elected Ulster Branch President, this honour was a source of great pride to all Ards members.

The club's condolences and thoughts are with his wife Dolores (Do), sons Andrew and Stephen and the wider family circle at this sad time.
