There were a few changes to the 2nd XV from last time out; Colin McClure started at hooker, Aaron Bittles moved to tight head, Gary Presho and Ross Torney were in the second-row, the back-row consisted of Matthew Johnston, Nathan Bell and Blake Lilburn. The back line was largely unchanged with the two exceptions of Jacob Cavanagh in at centre and Harry Blaney at fullback. Keir Edgar, Johnny King and Adam Faloon were on the bench.
The game started with Carrick kicking off towards Scrabo Tower. The Ards pack started well with some good carries and Paul Cox put his boot to good use getting good territory into the Carrick 22. From two lineouts in the opening 10 minutes the Ards pack drove towards the Carrick line, scrum half Joel Clarke let Torney loose to barge over the line to score. Cox converted one of the tries to make the score Ards 2nd XV 12 - 0 Carrickfergus 2nd XV.
Carrick replied with an unconverted score of their own to make it Ards 12-5 Carrickfergus.
The next score came from a penalty in front of the posts from Cox to make it Ards 15-5 Carrickfergus.
Torney completed his hat-trick with another powerful run, with Paul Cox adding the extras to make it Ards 22-5 Carrickfergus.
Aaron Bittles, who has been in fantastic form of late for both the 2nd and 3rd XV carried this on, with a try from distance. Cox again converted to bring the scoreline to Ards 29-5 Carrickfergus.
Against the run of play and from bad errors in defence, Carrickfergus scored before half time and converted to make the half time score Ards 29-12 Carrick.
After the break Adam Coulter went over for an unconverted break away try to make the score Ards 34-12 Carrickfergus.
Carrick pulled a converted try back and the board now read Ards 34 -19 Carrick.
The remainder of the game was seen out with tries from Clarke and Faloon with Cox adding the extras to Clarke’s score. A solid performance saw the continued unbeaten run of our 2nd XV with a final score of Ards 46 - 19 Carrickfergus.
